work progress

  • “Endless Nile table” was inspired from the slow and perpetual flow of the Nile River
  • combines with a futuristic deconstruction of conventional table and seating concepts
  • a wooden base with a reinforced steel structure
  • white Dupont Corian helps achieve fluidity and clarifies the table’s lines and structure

We inspired our sculpture from river and added in karim rashid's design characteristic "simpler, less cluttered, more sensual envelopment, curvy random shapes and lively colors".

Here are the work progress we did:

Model Making

While we start to do our sculpture, we face a lot of problems!
We expect our outcome will look like a plastic sculpture,
but it is difficult to bend a plastic and the most important is we don't where to find this kind of resources...

At first, we decide to use long shaped balloon but balloon is too fragile and not solid at all.

Then, we come out an idea, paper mache.
We blow the balloons and covered the balloons completely with the paper mache,
set then aside to dry.
After that, take a small pin and popped the balloons.

Although this is a good method but it doesn't give
us kind of plastic textures. (smooth, clean and shiny)

At the end,  we found plastic tube is the most suitable material.
It is flexible and durable, we insert wire inside on it to form the shape nicely.
Besides that, we also using clay, recycle paper, aluminum foil to construct our sculpture.

Here is the bottom view of our sculpture.

Final Outcome....we named it"Endless Splendid"!

Specific work

Here are some works design by Karim Rashid.
As a Prince of Plastic, Karim Rashid definitely likes to use plastic in his designs
because its materials that have wonderful properties, it is durable,
malleable, and can be quite comfortable.

With new technologies such as rotomoulding,
he can create sensual and organic shapes that have never existed.
Using plastic also enables his designs to be more accessible on the market.
So, let take a look with his impressive design.

One of his works “Isola 8"lounge is name derives from
the Italian word for “island” and the number of people
that this compelling design accommodates.

“The inspiration for Isola was to create an oasis from the static world,
an island for eight that offers a myriad of seating solutions,” says Karim Rashid.
The swirling form, he adds, suggests not only an island but also the symbol for infinity.

Ideal for lobbies, lounges, libraries and a wide range of other public venues, Isola 8 combines great aesthetic possibilities with environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.

And from a green standpoint, it's important to note that Isola 8 is constructed with FSC-certified laminated wood products and soy-based foam.

Kloud Chair was inspired from the fluid and soft forms
found in nature to arrive at the simple yet sensuous.
The Kloud chair lends a new meaning to comfort and
design in any modern setting, whether public spaces,
offices or residential, bringing the finest design to public space.

It was constructed of a laminated wood base frame
with rubber webbing under a fixed cushion.
A tubular steel frame anchors the foam body,
deeding additional strength and structural support.
Upholstery options for Kloud include leather or fabric in a variety of colors.
Measurements: 38″ W x 28.5″ D x 30.5″

The Lotus shelve is a trendy furniture designed by Karim Rashid for Tonelli
Inspired by the geometry and beauty of a slice of lotus root,
the Lotus Oval Display Unit is a dynamic approach to storage.

Two toned, it features five spacious shelves,
to store and display books and accent objects,
sandwiched between smoked tempered glass panels.

The Lotus Oval Display Unit made of acid,
smoked and tempered transparent glass transparent glass and polished aluminum at the legs
Polished aluminum legs set at an angle support and complement the organic design.

(After research and analysis about karim rashid works, i found each of his works have a different inspiration or concept. It was really great when i looked at the furniture which have a "story"!)

Contemporary Style__Karim Rashid

Definition of Contemporary Style
-Contemporary furniture can be described by the words "current" and "modern."
-can refer to "contemporary trends in design."
-embraces the less-is-more philosophy
-sleek designs for furniture that can be stark, yet functional
-be classified as urban and innovative in regards to current furniture trends

While research about the contemporary designer, there a lot who design furniture, product, fashion and more. After the discussion with my group member, we decided to search about furniture designer, as we think that contemporary furniture is interesting and rarely seen...

Then we found him-Karim Rashid (Prince of Plastic). A guy who love pink colour??? and his work is totally different with nowadays design, his design is colourful, and you can notice that they are all in simple form but what made they so unique?

Karim Rashid
-Karim Rashid was born in cairo, egypt in 1960; half english, half egyptian and raised in england and canada.
-Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 35 countries attest to Karim's legend of design
-He received a bachelor of industrial design in 1982 from carleton university in ottawa, canada
-His works are in the permanent collections of 14 Museums
-His projects range is from products, interiors, fashion, furniture, lighting, art, music to installations

The reason why his use plastic in a lot of his designs?
-Because it’s a material that have wonderful properties, it is durable, malleable, and can be quite comfortable.
-With new technologies such as rotomoulding, He can create sensual and organic shapes that have never existed.
-Using plastic also enables his designs to be more accessible on the market.

Design Style
-design style "sensuous minimalism"
-With curvy random shapes, lively colors and some interesting wall designs, the whole space has a revolutionary 90s design.
-intrinsic to living a simpler, less cluttered but more sensual envelopment.
-It combines clean and simple lines with soft, rounded, organic, even biomorphic, shapes, resulting in objects that are beautiful and interesting despite their lack of ornamentation.
-"His designs are always fun. Even though he draws a lot of inspiration from other design eras, he reinterprets them in a very futuristic way," says Paul Rowan, vice president of Umbra, a Toronto home-accessories manufacturing company that was one of Rashid's first clients.
-His designs reflect his philosophy of living completely in the present.
-"I want to develop things that are about this day and age in which we live, because the reality is, we don't live in the past.
-He's enamored of technology and how its efficiencies reduce manufacturing costs, allowing him to be a designer for the middle-brow masses
-Each of his products is characterized by a careful research into the history of design and architecture and his passion for technology and materials.

ART AND CRAFT MOVEMENT > ART NOUVEAU

ART AND CRAFT MOVEMENT
  • English aesthetic movement of the second half of the 19th century
  • William Morris is considered the father of the Arts & Crafts movement
  • a style of design that looked to handicraft and traditional forms and techniques

BACKGROUND
  • Industrial Revolution strengthened the British Empire and propelled its economy
                                                                BUT
  • workers >performed mind-numbing, repetitive tasks, low wages, living in slums.
  • products > shoddily produced, cheap and unimaginative imitations of historical styles.
  • idealized > democratize the arts, to create art "made by people and for the people"

  • he believed that reforming the mode of production and the products of the industrial age would in turn reform society
  • In 1861, Morris' company produced decorative arts like furniture, tapestry and stained glass, with the various artists and craftsmen collaborating together to make things by hand, using traditional methods and materials.
  • simple forms, truth to material, nature as a reference subject
  • his love of country-garden nature and medieval ideals of chivalry, which would recur in his art and his poetry
  • were an inspiring contribution to Art Nouveau artists, such as Victor Horta and Henri van de Velde.
  • He also infused a sense of moral consciousness into the post-industrial design process, raising questions of workers' rights and environmental responsibility

William Morris
- artist, designer, preservationist
- designed Brer Rabbit Wallpaper
- simple form with repetition
- nature (flower) as reference subject
- rendered in warm hues, include borders
- reminiscent of traditional patterns and stencil techniques
- can be used to decorate an entire room, or can be used above a dado rail or can be used on a single wall to create and arts and crafts ambienc

The reason why i choose this wallpaper because
when i found research in google image, i was attract by the wallpaper, especially i like blue colour.
The wallpaper is fill with flora and fauna, it made me comfortable while i look at this picture.
ART NOUVEAU
  • Art Nouveau occurred in 1890-1914
  • It was a way of thinking about modern society and new production methods.
  • urban life as we now understand it was established
  • Old customs, habits, and artistic styles sat alongside new, combining a wide range of contradictory images and ideas
  • It was an attempt to redefine the meaning and nature of the work of art.
  • Art Nouveau designers also believed that all the arts should work in harmony to create a "total work of art,"
  • in an attempt to combine life and art
  • Art Nouveau is characterized by its elegant decorative style, detailed patterns, curving lines, and art innovation.
  • By making beauty and harmony a part of everyday life, artists make people's lives better.
  • Art Nouveau obtained a nickname 'the noodle style' in French, 'Le style nouilles'.
  • Art Nouveau emphasized handcrafting as opposed to machine manufacturing, the use of new materials.
  • Art Nouveau artifacts are beautiful objects of art, but not necessarily very functional.

charles rennie mackintosh (1868-1928)
-the Scottish architect and designer
-combining a progressive modernity with the spirit of romanticism
-created many of the best loved and most influential buildings, furniture and decorative
-created a unique and individual style
-geometric forms in place of organic-inspired symbolic decoration.

HILL HOUSE CHAIR - 1903
-size: height 1400mm x depth 35mm x width 42mm
-material:Lacquered ash wood, seat upholstered in leather
-the design was far more important than the function
-the chair was intended more as an art piece than to actually be used as a chair.
-the slender back legs are elliptical in shape with a series of ladder rails linking them together
-the seat pad is also very small to emphasise the chair's fragility.

I choose the chair because it look different with nowadays furniture and it give me simple, elegant, grand mood.
But i pretty sure i will not brought this chair because it will look weird if i sit on it.

Joy of work

Being a design student,
definitely we have to be creative,
start from research ,analysis, development, mock up ,(redesign) ,final, present!

While in progress, sometime i will face a lot of problem
poor time management cause me almost late submission
redesign/ redo cause me lose confidence
however
i am glad that my classmates help me a lot
we share our opinion, find out things that should improve and....more

Stay up night become common in our life.
But i really enjoy when i saw the final outcome.
If made me have a great sense of accomplishment,
although it had to spend a lot of money for buying material
(explore and find out the most suitable materials)
stay up at night and only sleep for a while in the morning
(it cause me a dark circles under my eye and pimples)
but every time i saw the outcome i really excited and all this is worth!

i like to share my happiness with other
every time when i  present my work
i hope everyone able to understand my idea/concept
and i very appreciate for every opinion or comment that they gave me
all these will become my future improvement

More over, i like to DIY
although it spends time and energy
but it really a different feeling
when you are holding things that made by YOURSELF
one more reason i like to DIY
i can save some money
and handmade the gift for my friends
(there always love it =D )

So, studying furniture and product is a new challenge for me,
i am sure that we have to design and making prototype
Although sometimes tired but i enjoy it very much
(just like the 3D kites....=P)

some more,
I think I'm a perfectionist and
this made me become very picky on my work!!
