BEFORE AND AFTER (Design Studies)

There is such a long time i didnt open and upload the blog,
Now is going to have my Year1 sme break(oh yeah!!)
And this will be the last post for my design studies in year1.

At first,
design studies in my mind is a "boring" course which study about history.
But now i gonna change my mind!

Every time after class, we need to update our blog,
we will have a topic or a "title" to write a summary or opinion.
Because of this, so we need to find more research
(not only from internet but also from book)and understand it clearly.
Now when i look back my blog post,
i still remember what i wrote.
(This allows us to learn more not only in class~)

After a few class, i found design studies a bit different with critical studies
(which i studied in foundation)
Design Studies learn more to our course FURNITURE AND PRODUCT
Such as ART DECO,
the characteristic of the furniture
-mass production
-geometric shapes
-sleek
-smooth
-mix materials
-futuristic colour

We also having a debate section"IS ORNAMENTATION A CRIME"
I am in Adolf Loos Team which more to minimalist style,
and we have discussion among my group member and
finding research together to support our points,
writing the assignment and at the end we had a presentation~

"Endless Splendid" is one of the sculpture we (ulva and me)
made for the Design Exploration.
A contemporary sculpture which inspire from designer karim rashid.
We had fun while doing the sculpture, we experiment and tried out many way
and the final sculpture look nice too...=)

A more thing, one of the class we had watching the movie "Captain America"
I am a girl who don't really like superhero or fiction movie
but i found out by watching movie we can also learnt history
(from the story background).
So, i decided to watch my first science fiction movie"Oblivion"
Ya, i love the story and tom cruise was so handsomeXDD!
By the way, it is a movie which more to futuristic~

Beside that we also have a chance to visit National Craft Day 2013(field trip)
I just realize traditional craft was so unique and beautiful.
In fact, I rarely notice all of the craft, but after this field trip
i have to say each piece required craftsman's craft skills,
manual dexterity and effort. We should appreciate all of these work...

Last week , we have another field trip to visit Petaling Street
for our professional standpoint project.
Although the weather is extremely hot but i still enjoy it.
Because finally i have a time to walk out a take a break in KL=D
At the end, i found that i didnt take much photos
i think only 15 pieces > <!
It is a bit hard for me to find traditional coffee shop in Petaling Street,
however, I'm still having lot of foods and snacks over there =P.

Textile---made in Malaysia

Malaysia's textiles and apparel industry accelerated in the early 1970s when the country embarked on export-oriented industrialisation.
  • Any filament, fiber, or yarn that can be made into fabric or cloth, and the resulting material itself.
  • The word originally referred only to woven fabrics but now includes knitted, bonded, felted, and tufted fabrics as well.
  • The basic raw materials used in textile production are fibers, either obtained from natural sources (e.g., wool) or produced from chemical substances (e.g., nylon and polyester).
  • Textiles are often associated with the production of clothing.
Textiles are used for wearing apparel, household linens and bedding, upholstery, draperies and curtains, wall coverings, rugs and carpets, and book bindings and etc.

The example of traditional hand woven textiles in Malaysia:

In Malaysian batik is a textile art that quite distinctive.
The most popular motifs are leaves and flowers.
Malaysian batik depicting humans or animals are rare because Islam norms forbid animal images as decoration.
However, the butterfly theme is a common exception.

Beside that, Malaysian textiles can also be classified into tie and dye batik & hand drawn batik, Baba & Nyonya textile, Sarawak textile, Sabah textile and Indian textile.

Some of the ladies was also sitting at there for demonstration.

If i want to make a new product from textile, i think i will  chose a handphone cover.
I will named it "Traditional x Cover"
A traditional batik style mix with phone cover which made of cotton cloth.
People can tear out and change their phone cover everyday with different "clothes".
The phone case was washable so don't worry it will get dirty.

Reflection

"A FUTURE PERFECT-Innovative minimalist style" this was the title of our essay,
and for the sculpture we named it "Endless Splendid"

In fact, we did a mistakes,
we misunderstanding about"lively colours"
At first, when we discussed the colour selection of our sculpture
we decided to use colourful colours such as candy colours
(that we both thought is "lively"colour)
After decided the colour (pink, blue and white),
we done another mistakes
we bought the wrong spray colour (creamy colour)
So, that why our final sculpture look more soft and creamy instead of lively.

After the presentation,
i research again the meaning of "lively" and main use colour in Karim Rashid's design
Lively mean "bright; vivid; glowing; strong; vigorous"
"his use of bold, bright colors is enthralling"
more than,
the pink that he used frequently was fuchsias colours, not the "pink" that we thought at all.

Besides that, our sculpture was inspired from RIVES.
But the outcome of it more like a fountain.
The water waves should flow in same direction
instead of spurting or spilling.

Of course, we should also improve our finishing to make it perfect!!!

work progress

  • “Endless Nile table” was inspired from the slow and perpetual flow of the Nile River
  • combines with a futuristic deconstruction of conventional table and seating concepts
  • a wooden base with a reinforced steel structure
  • white Dupont Corian helps achieve fluidity and clarifies the table’s lines and structure

======================================================================

We inspired our sculpture from river and added in karim rashid's design characteristic "simpler, less cluttered, more sensual envelopment, curvy random shapes and lively colors".

Here are the work progress we did:

MOCK UP
-we try to use different materials and colours

DEVELOPMENT

-combine two ideas and proceed a final design

Model Making

While we start to do our sculpture, we face a lot of problems!
We expect our outcome will look like a plastic sculpture,
but it is difficult to bend a plastic and the most important is we don't where to find this kind of resources...

At first, we decide to use long shaped balloon but balloon is too fragile and not solid at all.

Then, we come out an idea, paper mache.
We blow the balloons and covered the balloons completely with the paper mache,
set then aside to dry.
After that, take a small pin and popped the balloons.

Although this is a good method but it doesn't give
us kind of plastic textures. (smooth, clean and shiny)

At the end,  we found plastic tube is the most suitable material.
It is flexible and durable, we insert wire inside on it to form the shape nicely.
Besides that, we also using clay, recycle paper, aluminum foil to construct our sculpture.

Here is the bottom view of our sculpture.

Final Outcome....we named it"Endless Splendid"!
